What a strange time to be alive; everything seems blurry right now. Events are canceled or postponed, but let’s try to look at it from a different angle. There is an opportunity to go out — or use rollers at home. And just ride. Without any goals to achieve. Cycling is a part of our lives and we need it now more than ever. We have asked people around us how they are coping with the situation and staying active during the lockdown.

I am spending more time with my relatives. Surely, my riding is slowing, but on the other hand, I am diving deeper on a spiritual level. When I go somewhere by bike, I try to choose places which depict the contrast between the current and old world. I enjoy riding in the center of Prague, typically tourist- and traffic-heavy places. Riding is teaching me how to explore again and observe the city from other perspectives.

I take long walks, workout and meditate outside. In January I did a 21-day morning yoga challenge and I’m still keeping it up. On my bike I choose routes where there are few other people. By the end of April, I achieved my goal to complete my first 1000 km this year.

I miss racing. The Olympics are postponed until next year. On the other hand I see the positive effect that now I can focus my training on things which I didn’t have time for before, during two years of qualification training. In the beginning of the lockdown, when everyone was a little bit frightened, we trained all alone. Over the course of time the velodrome reopened. We have a gym in the basement where training continues with some restrictions. On the track we’re able to train without any restrictions due to the open space. On the road we ride in groups of two, three at maximum.

I have enjoyed going out solo and just relishing the peace and tranquility. In Australia we are still able to go outdoors for exercise. I have spent the last month doing a mix of road and trail riding. Apart from cycling, I walk 5-10km most days. I really enjoy getting out for a walk in the middle of the day to clear my head and immerse myself in nature. What I miss the most is riding with my mates, the camaraderie, and a bit of competitiveness. I’m looking forward to all the chit-chat in the bunch and the post-ride coffees again (the most important part).
