The magnificent vistas of the Julian Alps, a valley with the sky-blue Soča river; a picturesque mountain landscape with perfect asphalt roads...that's Bovec, a small Slovenian town and our base for the long Repete/Asphalt weekend dedicated to mountaintop finishes. We had a simple plan to enjoy some proper alpine cycling at last. There were two epic climbs on the schedule: Vršič saddle (1611 meters above sea level) and a similarly tough ride to the Mangart saddle (2072 meters above sea level), with some perfect weather at the top.

One of the most well-known of them, the so-called “Kobarid Breakthrough”, is among the most remarkable events of WWI and among the greatest military operations in the history of Slovenia. The primary goal of the Italian army in the Soča river area was to conquer the Austro-Hungarian controlled Trieste. With an ingenious strategic plan, the Austro-Hungarian forces defeated the Italian troops and pushed the front deep into Italian territory, to the Piava river. At Soča, thousands of Czech soldiers fought alongside the Austro-Hungarian army. The battles had tremendous losses, with several hundred thousand soldiers counted among the casualties.
